Newcomers are generally referred to Fuji gis as they have a low cost(allowing you to purchase two for rotating)and good quality. Whatever you want and feel like spending, it's up to you. If cost is no concern buy whatever your gym allows.

I agree with Le Quack, give Fuji a try, cheap and good quality.

Different gi have a different fit, some fit slimmer body types while others stockier. If you are just starting go low cost, this way if you find it is not for you you are not out much. You can get a decent gi on here for around 60 to 70 bucks. Find out about how it fits your body type, a tight or baggy gi is a pain. Ask people from your gym who are a similar build for recommendations.

5'11 , 180. I've seen different sizing charts where I would be either an A2.5 or A3. Which is better?

Get an A3. This is a gold weave and it's white, this gi will definitely shrink over time.

I've got this gi already. The pants shrank about three inches in length. The jacket was pretty consistent. Buy bigger.

I've seen a size chart on another site, not too sure how accurate the height measurements are compared to BJJHQ's, look at the weight. You're definitely underweight for the A3 but it would be a safe choice considering the shrinkage of the gold weave. Are you used to having gis that are bigger on you?
