Tatami for bare feet. Smooth for wrestling shoes. Either could work for the opposite. You might just have a bit too much grip with wrestling shoes on Tatami.

Also, smooth is gentle on the skin for things like practicing shots without skinning yourself. Smooth will still gives you Matburn, but Tatami can peel your skin if it’s rough enough.

The hatch pattern typically seen in BJJ Gyms is tatami. Wrestling mats are smooth. Both will work, but tatami is designed towards bare feet.
